The season of Lent is a portion of the liturgical church calendar when disciples of Jesus seek to live into the journey that Jesus made from the Mount of Transfiguration to the moment he entered the city of Jerusalem. This was the portion of Jesus’ life when it became clear to him that he must go to Jerusalem and be executed by crucifixion. He warned his disciples that the cost of following him was great.

Each Gospel writer deals with this section–often called the Travel Narratives–in a unique way. I compiled the images below to allow you to visually observe each author’s version of the narratives. Each image is a page from A Cartoonist’s Guide to the Bible. Use the links to explore each page in detail.

  • Compare and contrast them.
  • How did each author use these stories to emphasize a particular aspect of Jesus’ teaching?
  • Note that John does not appear here. John did not structure his Gospel around the Galilee to Jerusalem arc of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John’s Jesus made this journey back and forth multiple times throughout his ministry.

I hope these images will serve as a helpful study tool to learn new things about Jesus, his teaching, and what it means for us to be called to follow him.
