Happy New Year! This week both lectionaries go back to fill in some gaps from Jesus’ origin story in Matthew. The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) takes us to Matthew 2:13-23 and the Narrative Lectionary (NL) takes us all the way back to the genealogy in Matthew 1:1-17. Every hero has a backstory. The first two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew tell the story of Jesus’ backstory. Matthew paints a portrait of Jesus that makes it clear that he is in the direct line to be the long-awaited Messiah that will set the Jewish people free and finally establish God’s Kingdom to bless all nations.
