Matthew 28:1-10 tells the story of Jesus’ resurrection. Here are some important observations from this short story:

  1. The Marys are the ones at the tomb. All four Gospels record that it was Mary and other women who were faithful to Jesus to the end. When the “men-who-are-named” ran for their lives at Gethsemane, the women never faltered. They were at the cross. They followed Joseph to the tomb. They returned after the sabbath to anoint the body. Women were, are, and always have been core to the Commonwealth of the Heavens.
  2. This was an earthshattering event. Matthew records an earthquake at Jesus’ death that ripped the veil in the Temple and brought the dead to life. Now, on Easter morning, the earthquake blows back the soldiers and opens up new possiblities for the future. God continually breaks open the things that bind us so new life can break out.
  3. We tend to look in the wrong places. The angel says, “He is not here.” The disciples were looking for Jesus in the place of death. He was, and is, in the place of life.
  4. They need to meet in Galilee. Geographical location is important to the Gospel of Matthew. Jerusalem was the place of confrontation and death for Jesus. Galilee was the place of life and abundance. The launch pad of the next phase of the Commonwealth of the Heavens was not Jerusalem. That center of power is gone. The next scene shows Jesus on a hill in Galilee sending his disciples to the world.

stay tuned…

May you feel the hope and abundant life that comes through the resurrection of Jesus. May whatever has a destructive grip on your life today be blown open by the earth-shaking message that “He is Risen! He is not among the dead! He is waiting in Galilee. Go to him!”
