My daughter, Leah, is going to graduate from high school in a month. She asked me to paint something for her as a graduation gift. We decided it would be a mountain lion sitting in front of the Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs. Why? Because she is going to UCCS (University of Colorado, Colorado Springs) next fall and they are the Mountain Lions.

I’ve been working on this painting off and on for the past few months. It is oil on canvas, 16″ x 20″. Here is a step-by-step. I still don’t know how to paint clouds very well. Oh well. She likes it, and that’s all that matters.

I made a radical move and enlarged the lion. I thought the painting needed a stronger focal point. This image gives scale.

went for a more dramatic sky. Not sure if its better or worse.
