This post offers visual resources for the texts in the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary for Sunday, January 29, 2022. This week the RCL takes us to the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 and 1 Corinthians 1:18-31. Both texts proclaim the foolishness of the Good News that Jesus offers the world. The Narrative Lectionary takes us to the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6, where we have the foolish notion that the creator of the universe actually cares about us and wants to listen.

Jesus begins his public ministry in the readings for this week. The Revised Common Lectionary takes us to John 1:29-42 where we see John the Baptist introduce his disciples to Jesus. The Narrative Lectionary continues in Matthew 4:1-17 and takes us into the wilderness where Jesus is tempted and then to Capernaum where Jesus takes up the mantle of John’s preaching.

Happy New Year! This week both lectionaries go back to fill in some gaps from Jesus’ origin story in Matthew. The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) takes us to Matthew 2:13-23 and the Narrative Lectionary (NL) takes us all the way back to the genealogy in Matthew 1:1-17. These are visual resources to help you study, preach, and teach these texts.

The story of Jesus’ birth in the Gospel of Luke confronts the oppressive power structures of Jesus’ day and offers an alternative vision of God’s commonwealth.
