The Gospel reading this week–Mark 13:1-8–offers a chilling commentary on human government. Jesus’ disciples were marveling at the beauty and grandeur of the Temple that Herod had embellished. Jesus replied, ““Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down…Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray.

Each text in the lectionary this week deals with the tension we feel between the temptation to put our trust in human power and the invitation to put our trust in God.

Timely texts, to be sure.
