Narrative Lectionary
This week the NL takes us to Matthew 25:1-13. Last week we saw that Jesus upset the authority structures of Jerusalem in chapters 21-23 when he was welcomed by a cheering crowd and turned over the money changers’ tables in the temple. The leaders verbally attacked Jesus, then he publicly condemned them for having failed the people.
Now, in Matthew 24-25, Jesus sits across the valley from Jerusalem and talks privately with his disciples. Again, through a series of parables and apocalyptic language, he warns them of the coming destruction of his beloved city. The particular parable for this week’s reading of the ten wedding attendants must be read in this context.
These images comes from page 17 in A Cartoonist’s Guide to Matthew.
