We light the first candle of the Advent wreath this Sunday. It is the candle of hope. The Narrative Lectionary takes us to the prophet Jeremiah this week. His is one of the most tragic stories in the Bible. Jeremiah lived to see the destruction of Jerusalem and watched the Babylonians carry off his people into Exile. He was taken to Egypt and never heard from again.

Yet, in the midst of all the despair, Jeremiah offers hope. He paints a picture similar to the vision we saw in Isaiah 11. One day God will restore Jerusalem and the people of God’s Promise will live in righteousness and justice and be the blessing to the nations that God called them to be.

This season, we wait for hope.
