The CORE sermon Series brings us to the next key element of our faith. We are the church, and the church is a holy mess. Martin Luther said that we are simil justus et peccator, which is Latin for similateously saint and sinner. The Apostle Paul said it best in Romans 7:14-25, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”
Isn’t that the story of our lives? Just because we believe that God has made us righteous through Jesus Christ and we have the power of the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean we don’t still mess up and struggle with our own selfish desires. Yet, we are a holy and beautiful creation of God as well. We are all in this mess together and lean into God’s grace and forgiveness like the air that we breathe.
The church is called the Body of Christ and we each have a different piece to contribute to the overall health of the church and the world. Like any body, there are lots of warts and imperfections as we are bumbling and stumbling along the way.
One of the passages for this week is 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. Here is an animation I did of this text a couple years ago. Enjoy!
