This weekend I will preach the first of two sermons from Romans. This weekend we’ll look at Romans 1:1-17 and the following weekend we’ll jump to Romans 5:1-11. The Narrative Lectionary calls for two more weeks in Romans that move through chapter 8, but because of Confirmation Sunday, we’re not doing the third week.
It is a difficult assignment to preach a sermon from Romans 1 with no context for Paul, the Epistles, and the church in Rome. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to approach it. For now, here is a well-done sketch of the context of Romans and the first four chapters from the guys over at the The Bible Project.
