This is a big week in the United States. This email goes out on the day before the election. You will preach and teach on the weekend following the election. Emotions are high. Stakes are high. My prayers are with you.

This week we find texts that deal with the abuse of power and the power of the Gospel to stand with and for the oppressed. We encounter Ruth and Boaz, Elijah and the Widow, and Jesus and the Widow in the shadow of a corrupted Temple system.

I am especially interested in Mark’s commentary on the widow. She stands in contrast to the stream of self-exalted religious leaders who seek to trap Jesus in his words. All of this happens inside the Temple grounds that the Herodian Dynasty had spent their entire careers gilding with gold at the expense of their oppressed people.
