Where did Jesus go?
We can take that question in many directions. The texts from the Revised Common Lectionary this week revolve around the story of Jesus’ ascension in Acts 1:6-11. Jesus spent time with his disciples for several weeks after his resurrection. Then he physically left them forever.
poof!
gone!
He went into the clouds. I wonder how that felt for the disciples. They had already lost him once, when he died on the cross and was buried. They were so excited to have him back! Now, he is leaving them for good. He promised to be with them to the end of the age, but his presence would be through the Holy Spirit.
Disciples of Jesus have been faced with this question throughout every generation. How do we follow a teacher that we can’t see? What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? What are we supposed to do now?
A Liminal Space
In some ways this week is a set up for Pentecost next week. It is a liminal space between not having Jesus physically present and not yet having a clear direction from the Spirit. Perhaps that is an angle we can take this week. I often feel like I’m in that liminal space. Our society seems to be in a liminal space. It is in these moments that we must dig deep and trust in the one who has made the promises.
What liminal spaces do you find yourself in today?
Below is a video I made during the lockdown of the Pandemic. It is an exploration of liminality. I hope you find it helpful. Peace.
