You may be wondering why there is a monster on the cover of this post. I had fun with this illustration to demonstrate the power of the frame. In this session I discuss the concept of framing a subject.

An Experiment

First, we start with this image. (don’t scroll down yet!)

What do you see? What story would you tell from this image?

You might wonder why this person is so afraid of a beautiful flower.

Perhaps they are allergic to it?

Perhaps there is a wasp on the back side of it.

Perhaps the glowing is radioactivity.

Now look at this image…

How has the story changed? Why? The only thing that actually changed is the framing of the image. When we tell a story, we have the power to determine what is left in and left out. Whenever you hear a story, especially in the news media, or study a subject, ask what might be left out of the frame that would help you better understand what is really going on.

The Frames We Have

In the next part of the video I talk through this image and discuss how there are different types of frames that we bring to any subject. The challenge for every learner is to: 1) become aware of your own framework, 2) learn how you might expand your framework to allow for more insight into the world and your neighbor who is different.

Introducing Clip Studio Paint

I conclude the video by introducing you to the app that I am using to create The Art Pastor’s Guide to Discipleship. It’s called Clip Studio Paint. I will offer more tutorials on how to use this app in the coming weeks.
