“You want me to eat what?!? Go where?!? Talk to whom?!?”

Can you imagine what was going through Peter’s mind when the Holy Spirit invited Peter to go to the house of a Roman Centurion? This soldier, Cornelius, represented everything that was wrong with the world. The Roman Empire was the oppressive occupiers of Peter’s homeland. They taxed and tortured his people.

Yet, Peter obeyed the call, went to Cornelius’ house…and the Holy Spirit poured out on that gentile family in the same way she poured out on Peter and his friends in Jerusalem.

The Spirit continually leads us to tear down the walls of hostility, to cross the barriers of cultural taboos, and learn the way of God’s love in the world.

Don’t we need that today?
