This post offers visual resources for the Revised Common Lectionary for July 9, 2023. The RCL take us to the story of Isaac and Rebekah in Genesis 24 and meditates on love and marriage as a place of refuge in the Psalms. The prophets and the Gospel reading depict the Messiah as the one who has conquered the enemy through peace, not violence and offers a place of refuge for all who are weary.  The NL continues a three-part series on 2 Peter.

Genesis 24

See the full family tree HERE.

Zechariah 9:9–12

I have not drawn anything specifically for Zechariah. However, this text is what the Gospel writers link to for Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The image below may be a fun image to use in this context as well. The small image to the right places Zechariah in the context of The Prophets.

Romans 7

This week we move a little farther through Paul’s argument to Romans 7:15–24 where he declares how powerless he is to resist the sin that lurks within him. Unfortunately I have not drawn anything specifically for this passage.

Gospel Reading Matthew 11:16–19, 25–30. Jesus responds to John’s disciples and calls out to all who are weak and heavy laden.

These images comes from page 8 in A Cartoonist’s Guide to Matthew.

Narrative Lectionary

The NL will be working through 2 Peter in the month of July. This is one of the few books for which I have never create a visual.

Join me every Monday at 4:00pm Central Time for a live Bible study on Zoom.

These sessions include:

  • a presentation of the visual resources for the lectionary texts for the week,
  • live discussion around the texts,
  • previews and behind-the-scenes peeks at what is happening at A Cartoonist’s Guide to the Bible

The video of the session remains available on the network to view at any time, in case you can’t make it for the live session.

This is a part of the Cartoonist’s Bible Network. I’d love to have you join us.

I’m constantly experimenting with different ways to work through new media to engage people in visual theology and spiritual formation. Here is my latest experiment. I’d love for you to try it out with me.

Join me on Thursdays at 2:00pm CST for a livestream art session on YouTube. I’m drawing through the book of Acts in real time.
