Revised Common Lectionary | Luke 20:27-38 | The Sadduccees Test Jesus

Jesus has entered Jerusalem (we skipped the Triumphal Entry) and stands in the Temple Courts. Here he is biraged with questions from the religious leaders that are designed to trap him and discredit him in public. The images below set the particular questions from the Sadduccees in context with the larger story. In the midst of these tests, Jesus predicts the destruction of the Temple and warns the people to a) not listen to the religious leaders, and b) prepare themselves for the worst.

This image come from page 21 in A Cartoonist’s Guide to Luke.

Here is a bonus image. Jesus counters the Sadduccees attacks by quoting the story of Moses and the burning bush. God reveals Godself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God is among the living, not the dead. Feel free to right click and “save as” this image to use it, or get it in the full Exodus 3 PowerPoint HERE.

Narrative Lectionary | 2Kings 5:1-15 | Elisha Heals Naaman

The Narrative Lectionary jumps from Solomon to the story of Elisha in 2 Kings. Much has happened in the country since then. The nation splits in two, forming the Kingdom of Israel to the North and the Kingdom of Judah to the South. A radical prophet named Elijah rises up and confronts the evil king Ahab. The book of 2 Kings begins with the ascension of Elijah and the transfer of his work to his protege, Elisha. The second image below gives the overall story of 2 Kings. The final image highlights Elisha’s series of miraculous stories in context. All of these stories happen in the shadow of conflict with Moab and Aram.
