These are the four texts chosen for our reformation Sunday celebration: Jeremiah 31:31-34, Psalm 46, Romans 3:19-28, and John 8:31-36. This is the 500th Anniversary of the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the chapel door in Wittenberg. He was not content to allow corruption and abuse of power to continue in the church. He was willing to be misunderstood and excommunicated from the church for his convictions.
Today, we are not called to look back and cling to a calcified tradition. We are called to lean forward, into the unknown, secure in our trust that God loves us, is for us, and leads us. The Spirit of God calls us to follow the cloud and continually be re-formed in God’s mercy every morning.
