The Narrative Lectionary poses us a formidable task this week. It essentially sets us up to tell the entire story of Joseph from Genesis 37-50. Even more, it begs us to fill in all the gaps between last week’s text in Genesis 15:6 to the end of the book. We preach for 17-20 minutes, so this is impossible.

I decided to at least attempt a quick overview of the story by drawing my way through the key points. I left out major sections (like Dinah, completely). These drawings tell enough to establish two key points:

  1. Joseph’s family was MESSED UP!
  2. Joseph had every reason to hate his brothers and seek vengeance.

The point I want to make this week is that, no matter how messed up our families (both biological families and world systems), God’s promise is faithful and God will work with whatever mess we create to bring about good.
