I’m going to preach Romans 6:1-14 for the Confirmation Service on Sunday (it is the text from the Narrative Lectionary and it is perfect for this event). The theme is Alive in Christ. Here is a sequence of images that help me think through Paul’s argument. Jesus’ death conquered the power of Sin and Death that seeks to enslave us. The resurrection, through the power of the Spirit, sets us free from Sin and Death and empowers us to walk in the newness of life. Yet, we consistently live as if this is not true and are still enslaved to Sin and Death (see Romans 7). Each day we must renew our baptismal identity and consider ourselves dead to Sin and Death and alive to God in Christ. Amen.
