The text for this week is a bit difficult. There are two passages from Joel chapter 2. (Joel 2:12-13, 28-29) The first passage talks about repentence. The second talks about restoration and the giving of the Holy Spirit to all people.
The overarching theme that I think I want to go with is that of Homecoming. The sermon title is “Return to God.” The Christmas season, and all the media hype that goes with it, is full of nostalgic notions of homecoming. We sing “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays.” Yet, what does homecoming really look like? What does it take to really go home, especially if the reason you’ve been away is because things have not gone well?
What do you think? I invite you to read these passages and give me your thoughts and/or illustrations for how this text can speak to us on the second week of Advent. Post comments on Facebook or the blog.
