Drawing with Feeling, A livestream drawing session. expressive portrait of young man

Valentine’s Day fell on a Friday this year. Art Pastor Live usually happens on Friday afternoon. So, I decided that I would dwell in the concept of love during this livestream. It ended up being like an illustrated sermon.

Here are some key moments throughout the stream that you can’t see in the final image.

These were the three things occupying my mind and spirit that day: What is Valentine’s Day?, The scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, and the Turn to Tyranny that seems to be happening in the USA Federal Government.

Love has been reduced to sentimentality in our Secular Age. Learn about the shift here. View a visual commentary on love here.

A major theme in the Gospel of Luke is that the Good News brings down the self-exalted and lifts up those who have been oppressed by society. Read visual commentary here.

The cross represents how God emptied Godself in the person of Jesus Christ and stands in solidarity with all who are oppressed. God meets us in our suffering. Read commentaries here and here and here.

Thinking about the cross as a tree, planted in the love of God.

The final image reflects my mission statement. View it below and unpack it here.

Most Fridays I go live at 4:00pm Central Time to spend about an hour working on an art project. This is my chance to invite you into my studio, talk about the fusion of art and theology, explore spirituality and scripture through visual art, nerd out about the Bible and Visual art, and just hang out with you.
