The Luther Seminary Sketchbook Project
I have a goal to sketch my way across the campus of Luther Seminary during the 2026-27 academic year. This is my way to honor the fact that this is our final year on the Como Avenue campus.
I’m making these sketches in an 8″x8″ watercolor sketchbook by Hahnemüle. I buy them at the best art store in the Twin Cities, Wet Paint.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
Page 1. The Norwegian Celtic Cross
July 21, 2026
medium: gouache
This is a replica of a Celtic cross from about 1000 A.D., believed to be the first Christian symbol erected in Norway.
It was given to Luther Seminary in 1956 by the Nordfjord Youth and stands in front of Bockman Hall.
It seemed a fitting start for the journey.

July 28, 2026
medium: gouache
The morning sun hitting the eastern side of Backman Hall’s front porch has captured me since I started working here in the summer of 2022.
It seemed important to frame the image with the branches of the oak trees. I stood at the base of one, shltered from the July sun, and caught this angle.
Tim Coltvet, Emily Rova-Hegener, and Emma sat on the picnic table during much of my three-hour session. Ken, Robin, and many other staff and students stopped by to participate in the experience.
I see this as a community journey.
