For this week’s Visual Lectionary Resources, we cross paths with two powerful focal points on power, failure, and love.
In the **Revised Common Lectionary**, we arrive at the culmination of Jesus’ encounters with the religious authorities in Matthew 22, where he distills all 613 laws down to the two foundational pillars: loving God with our whole heart and loving our neighbor as ourselves.
Meanwhile, the **Narrative Lectionary** takes us straight into the harrowing aftermath of David and Bathsheba, exploring how absolute power can corrupt even the most devout leaders, yet leaving us anchored in God’s persistent grace and the reality that while God forgives, we must still live with the earthly consequences of our actions.

The readings for the Revised Common Lectionary for July 14 take us to a wide variety of texts. In 2 Samuel we see David returning the ark of the covenant in a parade of worship. We begin a series on the letter to the Ephesians (stay tuned for my video on that later this week). The Gospel reading tells the story of how Herod executed John the Baptist in order to save face during a drunken party.

This post offers visual resources for the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary for October 22, 2023. The RCL continues with Exodus where Moses encounters the presence of God. It also takes us to Isaiah 45 and 1 Thessalonians. The Gospel is Matthew 22:15-22 where Jesus is asked about paying taxes to Caesar. The NL explores the story when David unified the tribes into one kingdom in 2 Samuel. The Gospel reading in Mark 11:8-10, the Triumphal Entry. I see a unifying theme in these texts that explores God’s expectations for a king or a political authority.
