It is my weekly habit to create some form of mind map whenever I study a text to preach. Honestly, I make one whenever I think about anything, because I am a visual thinker. Our lead pastor asked if I would make one for every week’s sermon topic, even if I wasn’t preaching, so that it could be included in our resource called the Grow Guide. I was happy to do so.
We jumped on the Narrative Lectionary in January of 2018 to preach through the Gospel of John. I drew an image each week, but discovered that my images were evolving. The series in the fall was topical and drew from two or three different texts. Those images were very mind-mappy in nature, with primarily words and arrows. The John series told a story. The images quickly evolved from being mind-maps to being more like a graphic novel. By the end of the series I was having fun with page layout and figuring out how to tell the heart of the story with pictures and words.
The following images were entirely created on an iPad Pro, in the procreate app, using an Apple Pencil.
The series is done, so I decided to post all the pages in one place. As you scroll down this post, enjoy the Narrative Lectionary selection of passages from the Gospel of John.
These images are now available in a printable graphic novel format. Each image is accompanied by supplemental images and commentary on the facing page.
