The Art Pastor explore spirituality and scripture with me through art and creativity

October 2025

Hi reader,

This month I would like to share two things with you that are very dear to my heart.

First, I created an art gallery of all my work from this past summer. Drawing, painting, illustration, animation, and contemplative art are a huge part of my spirituality. It is how I connect with God and the world around me. I hope you enjoy browsing this gallery as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Second, I ask for prayer over a new research project that I launched last month. I am leading a Participatory Action Research Project with a group of young fathers who desire to be disciples of Jesus and raise their children to know and love God and neighbor, the way Jesus taught us to do. We met twice in September and will spend this coming weekend at a cabin to do some deeper work. The project is scheduled to run through the end of May as we create and action-reflection-action pattern over the school year.

I spent the summer soaking in literature around the topics of masculinity, the suburban context, fatherhood, PAR methodology, and spiritual formation through life stages. Stay tuned for my literature reviews coming soon.

This project falls under the larger umbrella of my ongoing work as a scholar called Deep in the Burbs. I care about how to help people in the suburban context grow in missional spirituality as disciples of Jesus.

I'm also teaching a course at Luther Seminary right now called Discipleship in the Missional Church. I have 30 students from all over the world, and it is a ton of fun. All of these things play well together.

I pray that you will grow deeper in the love of God this month. I hope that some of the resources I create will foster that growth for you.
Sharing this journey with you,
Steve Thomason

The focus of my scholarly research is missional spirituality in the suburban context. The academic study of Spirituality is inherently interdisciplinary. These are the four basic categories in which I seek to grow as a scholar and contribute to the church at large.
