The Art Pastor explore spirituality and scripture with me through art and creativity

August 2025

Hi reader,

The month of August brings a confluence of activities and ideas for me. I hope that some of these things will be interesting, encouraging, and inviting to you:
  1. Enjoying a summer of art. One of my goals for this summer was to draw and paint just for the pure joy of the creative process. I've been doing that and hope to continue throughout August. One way I'm doing it is by going live every Thursday night on Art Pastor Live!
  2. Digging into scholarship. I will launch a year-long Participatory Action Research project in September with a group of young fathers in a suburban context. This is the ongoing work of Deep in the Burbs. This summer I am diving into the areas of suburban studies, Christian spirituality, masculinity, and PAR as leadership. My bibliography is growing and my head is spinning!
  3. Refining the Visual Lectionary. I'm very excited to launch the next iteration of my ongoing work with both the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary. Each week I curate all the illustrations I've made over the years for each text of the weekly lectionary and put them on one page. Every Monday morning I send an email to a growing list of subscribers that has a short devotional reflection on the readings and a link to the resource page. It now has its own URL at visuallectionary.com. Please share!
  4. Creating the Spanish version of John. I'm working with a translator this summer to create a Spanish version of A Cartoonist's Guide to John. As of the writing of this email I have completed 14 pages and the translator has completed 21 pages. We hope to be finished by the end of August. If you would like to contribute to help me pay the translator, please click here.
Sharing this journey with you,
Steve Thomason

When Life Seems Meaningless

When Life Seems Meaningless

Do you ever look around and think, what is the point of all this? It seems like rich, greedy, power-hungry people keep winning while the poor, marginalized people continue to suffer. Well-meaning people keep yelling at each other and the world becomes more deeply divided. What's the point?!? You are not alone. This is the refrain of the texts in …

The Other Lord's Prayer | A Reflection on Luke 11:1-13

The Gospel reading this week takes us to Luke's version of the Lord's Prayer. I call it "the other Lord's Prayer" because the one that is recited in worship services is from Matthew's Gospel. If you are interested in comparing the two prayers, click the link below for The Art Pastor's Guide to the Lord's Prayer. Luke's version of how …
This network is a place for you to connect with others who are interested in exploring spirituality and scripture through visual art and creativity. One of the benefits of membership is to be part of the weekly Visual Text study on Zoom every Monday at 4:00pm CT. If you can't make it live, you can watch the recording in your own time. Give it a try!
