FEAST stands for Festival at Easter of Art, Sound, and Thanksgiving. It involves a visual art exhibition followed by a worship service and it happened last Wednesday night. Kent Henrickson, our Contemporary Worship Director at Easter, created the FEAST a dozen years ago.

This year Kent invited me to speak and then hook up my iPad to the large screens and paint while the Messengers led the congregation in singing and prayer. The worship set lasted about twenty minutes. That’s not a lot of time to create a finished piece of art.

The image above is the final result.

This is only the second time I have painted on my iPad in front of a live audience. It was really fun to sit amongst the band, like I was one of the musicians.

A couple people asked me why I covered up the trees in the background with a large black tree. The foreground tree did get a little bigger than I had envisioned, but I actually ran out of time to make any kind of edits. I did the foreground on a separate layer, so here is the image without the foreground. Which do you like better?

Here is a time-lapse video of the image. This is something the app I use–called Procreate–automatically creates. It simply records every stroke of the image and then pumps out a video. That means it is not in real time. I think the time lapse only lasts thirty seconds. Yet, you will get a glimpse of how the image unfolded during the service.

Enjoy!
