My birthday was last week, and we had “reading days” at school, so I took a little time for myself. What did I do, you ask? I geeked out on my iPad, of course! I’d like to compare two animation apps that I’ve been playing with, for those of you who might be curious to know how they work. These apps are:

Both apps are lots of fun and produce quality animation. Here’s a quick break down.

AnimationDesk

what I like:

  • cool interface. looks like a traditional animation desk (thus, the name)
  • has a stamp pad feature that is pretty helpful when duplicating objects
  • provides a “cloth” to put on the drawing for wrist protection

what I don’t like:

  • only goes up to 12fps
  • the video upload to YouTube did not render properly, which totally botches the whole point of animating (you’ll see what I mean when you watch the video.

my test. I sketched this on the iPad while sitting a Barnes and Noble Cafe…

Animation Creator HD

what I like:

  • very clean interface. lots of screen space
  • the brushes are very robust
  • allows multiple layers on each frame
  • great flexibility for creating backgrounds. Let’s you import from camera roll, camera, or the current frame that you have just drawn.
  • goes up to 24fps.
  • robust sound library

what I don’t like:

  • boring interface (compared to AnimationDesk). Yet, it is sleek and clean, so, in the long run, it’s better.
  • that’s pretty much it. In other words, I like it.

my test. This was a super quick sketch done in a few minutes while sitting at the kitchen table. That’s the real cool thing about these…the portability.

I like both apps. I’ll probably use them both for different reasons. If I had to choose, right now, I think I would go with Animation Creator HD.
